This was a tale of two halves, and the film tells us why. Joe Burrow’s average time to throw dropped from 3.49 seconds in the first half to 2.56 in the second, as the Bengals adjusted their formations, attacked the middle of the field and found answers for Jesse Minter’s pressure packages. We go through the coverage adjustments, Nate Wiggins’ struggles against Tee Higgins, Kyle Hamilton’s difficult afternoon and the missed tackles that continue to plague this defense. There was plenty to like about Baltimore’s first-half execution, but the bigger question is why they couldn’t sustain it.

Episode Rundown

00:00 – Introduction: A tale of two halves for the Ravens defense

01:15 – Joe Burrow’s adjustment: How his time to throw changed everything

04:35 – Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey: Why condensed formations created problems

08:06 – First-half film breakdown: Jesse Minter’s simulated pressures and aggressive coverage

10:45 – Pressure and coverage working together: How Baltimore took away Burrow’s options

13:10 – Cincinnati’s second-half adjustments: Shorter routes, quicker throws and attacking leverage

17:10 – Breaking down the Tee Higgins touchdown: Kyle Hamilton, Malachi Starks and the Cover 1 debate

23:10 – The tackling problem: Poor technique, missed opportunities and playing out of control

26:50 – Defensive leadership: Who steps up when things start going wrong?

29:15 – Why the defense looked different: Playing too conservatively and failing to disrupt Burrow’s rhythm

31:00 – Looking ahead to Buffalo: Josh Allen presents another major test for Baltimore’s tackling

32:40 – Accountability and execution: What Jesse Minter needs to fix

34:00 – Closing thoughts: Why the Ravens need to maintain their first-half intensity for four quarters

There are much bigger problems with this run game, starting with an offensive line that isn’t moving bodies, questionable blocking assignments and a scheme that doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. Henry finished with just 45 rushing yards despite generating 51 yards after contact. That should tell you something about what’s happening in front of him.

In this episode of After The Tape, we’re digging into the film to figure out where things are going wrong. We’ll look at the Ravens’ struggles running both zone and gap concepts, some concerning decisions in pass protection and why the offense continues to look so dependent on Lamar Jackson. There were a few positives, particularly Zay Flowers and Ja’Kobi Lane, but there’s plenty for Declan Doyle and this coaching staff to figure out.

Episode Rundown

00:00 – Introduction: Breaking down the Ravens’ offensive struggles against Cincinnati

00:46 – Derrick Henry isn’t the problem: The Ravens’ run game identity crisis

03:23 – Film breakdown: What’s working and what’s failing in the running game

06:08 – Missed blocks, blown assignments and questionable run concepts

09:20 – Why the Ravens need to commit to a rushing identity

10:23 – Formation and alignment issues hurting the run game

12:06 – Pass protection problems and a bizarre offensive line slide

14:21 – Zay Flowers’ touchdown and a perfectly executed screen

14:57 – Breaking down the controversial fourth-down play

15:30 – Zay Flowers and Ja’Kobi Lane provide some optimism

17:16 – Deep shots, penalties and offensive execution

18:17 – Final thoughts: Just how dependent is this offense on Lamar Jackson?

Normally, that’s more than enough to win a football game. Cole and Spencer Schultz go through the tape to break down what went right, including a much-improved pass rush with Trey Hendrickson and Nnamdi Madubuike leading the way. But there are still some questions about how Jesse Minter is deploying his secondary, particularly the amount of space Baltimore is conceding underneath. We also take a closer look at the Jerry Jeudy completion that helped seal the game and why some of these coverage tendencies could become a bigger issue against quarterbacks like Joe Burrow.

Episode Rundown

00:00 — Defensive performance: Baltimore holds Cleveland to 235 yards and 13 points, but it isn’t enough to overcome the offense’s struggles.

02:15 — The Jerry Jeudy completion: Breaking down Cleveland’s dagger concept against Cover 2, the responsibilities of Malaki Starks and Jalen Hawkins, and why the Browns had the right call.

08:40 — Jesse Minter’s coverage tendencies: Why Baltimore continues to concede space underneath, the conservative approach in Cover 4, and the risks against better quarterbacks.

13:15 — Scheme vs. execution: Minter is creating opportunities for his defenders, but missed tackles and failures to finish plays remain an issue.

15:40 — Inside Baltimore’s pass rush: How Anthony Weaver is using alignments, stunts and simulated pressure to create free rushers, including the impact of Trey Hendrickson.

22:25 — Nnamdi Madubuike is finding his form: Five pressures, explosive individual wins and how Hendrickson’s presence is creating better opportunities along the defensive front.

27:15 — Defensive standouts and the bigger picture: Kyle Hamilton’s impact, Nate Wiggins’ development and why Baltimore’s defense is trending in the right direction.

32:55 — Looking ahead to Joe Burrow: Why the Ravens need more deceptive coverage rotations and turnover opportunities against Cincinnati’s passing attack.

Coker had an injury that knocked him off serious receiving production. With Tet McMillan getting so much attention, Bryce Young feeds the sturdy receiver. Hill has also started to look like his old self, and the Ravens defense will look to feed the back on wheel routes, screens and fast to flat passes to stretch stacked boxes laterally.
