The Ravens pass rush had a day against Daniel Jones. According to Next Gen Stats, Jones was pressured on 18 of his 34 dropbacks — 52.9% — the highest rate of any quarterback in Week 1. More than half his dropbacks ended with a Raven in his face. That’s a pretty damn good way to make life difficult on a quarterback.

Before we get into this, let’s establish what this isn’t. This isn’t intended to be a systemic review of Jesse Minter’s defense or a declaration that Shane Steichen has somehow cracked the code on Baltimore’s Head Coach and his defense. We’re looking at one game, played with an entirely different group of players in Los Angeles. But when the Colts faced Minter’s Chargers in Week 7 last season, Steichen got the better of him, and quite frankly kicked the shit out of his defense. With Baltimore opening the season against Indianapolis on Sunday, there’s value in going back to that tape and looking specifically at how Steichen attacked Minter’s tendencies, where he found answers and what we can learn from it heading into Week 1.

Adam Randall’s rookie season is going to start on injured reserve, but the good news is the Ravens designated him to return. His preseason was a little stop-and-start because of the injury. He played in Week 1, sat out Week 2, then got back on the field for the finale against Washington. Even with the missed game, Randall finished with 17 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown, plus four catches for 47 yards. That’s 118 yards from scrimmage on only 21 touches, which is a pretty damn productive preseason for a guy who was playing wide receiver at Clemson not that long ago.

If you had Joe Fagnano on your final 53 man roster prediction at the start of August then I owe you an ice cold Molson Canadian. He was an undrafted free agent in a quarterback group that also included Diego Pavia, the Heisman runner-up who naturally got most of the attention. Four months later, the overhyped Pavia is long gone and Fagnano is on the Ravens’ 53-man roster. He earned it, finishing the preseason 56 of 75 (74.7%) for an NFL-best 509 yards, 3 touchdowns and just 1 interception.

Ronnie Stanley and Roger Rosengarten are locked in, but the Ravens still need to figure out who is playing tackle if one of them misses time. Coming into camp, Carson Vinson was the obvious answer. Baltimore spent a fifth-round pick on him a year ago knowing he needed time, and we really didn’t get much of a chance to see where he was in that development as a rookie. This summer has been different. Vinson looks more comfortable in his sets, he’s doing a better job using his length and you’re seeing fewer of those reps where everything falls apart once the rusher gets into him. There’s still work to do, but he looks a lot more like an NFL tackle than the raw prospect Baltimore drafted a year ago.

Against Philadelphia, Ioane’s debut got off to a rocky start. The first drive featured some of the issues you’d expect from a rookie guard adjusting to NFL speed: late recognition, imperfect leverage and a couple of reps where things happened faster than he was ready for. But once he settled in, the game changed. Ioane was dominant the rest of the way, showing the power, movement skills and physical temperament that made him such an intriguing addition to Baltimore’s offensive line.

Player Spotlight: Danny Pinter

Offensive line has never been the sexiest position group in the NFL, but it’s certainly one of the most important. That’s doubly true for a Ravens team that has seen some shaky play at positions along the line the last several seasons, and paid dearly for it with big game blunders, and injuries to their starting quarterback.

You can’t blame too much of that on former starting center Tyler Linderbaum, but unfortunately for Baltimore, the Pro Bowler priced himself way out of their market, and they’ve found themselves starting over at the position. One of the candidates to take the job is seven year veteran Danny Pinter, who comes over from Indianapolis with a nice combination of experience, and still untapped potential.

Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford has talked up Pinter’s athleticism, and some of the exciting things he’s seen on tape from the 6’4", 305 pounder. Veteran guard John Simpson has been equally impressed, recently noting Pinter’s mental handle on the position that requires a lot of X’s and O’s acuity:

"He's been great, man," Simpson said. "He's coming in, communicating well, just knowing his stuff, and he's playing at a level I feel like where we can get up there. He calls it out, and we just go, and that's what you need from a center."

As a possible nod to him having the inside track at the starting job which he’s mainly competing with Ethan Pocic for, Pinter got the start in the Ravens first preseason game against the Eagles on Saturday. There’s some good and bad to dive into, but after the two series he was on the field for, it’s hard not to walk away pretty encouraged by what you see.
