The Opening Drive, 8/7: Camp Tensions Heat Up, Bateman Speaks Out, Tyler Loop Shines
Added heat brings out some tension with a couple practice dust ups and an interesting comment from Rashod Bateman
The heat and humidity settled over Owings Mills on Thursday morning, with temperatures climbing to 91°F and the heat index pushing toward 100°F. Fittingly, the temperature on the practice field seemed to rise with it, as the Ravens turned in one of their more physical and chippy practices of training camp, complete with a few post-play dust-ups.
The conditions also took their toll. Several players were clearly feeling the effects of the heat, while iDL C.J. Okoye was forced to leave practice early due to the conditions.
Defense Reclaims Momentum in Chippiest Practice Yet
After spending much of the past week watching the offense string together highlight after highlight, the Ravens defense answered emphatically on Thursday. Trey Hendrickson continued to look every bit like the impact addition Baltimore envisioned, recording another sack, while Keondre Jackson broke up a pass intended for Matthew Hibner. T.J Tampa also forced a turnover by ripping the football away from Rasheen Ali after the catch as the defense swarmed to the football throughout the opening portion of practice.
The intensity eventually boiled over. Carson Vinson and Tavius Robinson got tangled up after a play, leading to one of several post-whistle scrums that prompted Jesse Minter to stop practice and address his defense directly. Moments later, another confrontation erupted between Mark Andrews and Hendrickson before Trenton Simpson stepped in to separate the two veterans.
Every training camp reaches the point where fatigue, competition and roster battles collide. Thursday felt like that day for Baltimore. While coaches never want unnecessary penalties or distractions, a little edge isn’t the worst thing—especially for a defense trying to establish a new identity under Minter. It’s a good sign to see the defense fiery after a few straight dominant offensive practices.
